The face of the World is changing rapidly day by day. in every corner of the world, new cities appear and expand at an amazing speed. Huge projects such as high-rises, bridges, roads, tunnels, dams are being constructed. This picture can be clearly illustrated by what has been happening during the last decade in Vietnam. More than thirty years ago the first 11-storey building in Vietnam was constructed in Hanoi. Ten years ago the first 30-floor tower appeared in Vietnam. Today, the height has reached to 60-70 storeys. During the last few years many tall towers, long bridges, deep tunnels, large hydro-power dams, etc have also appeared in Vietnam. Such projects would be a dream for Vietnamese people just years ago. One of the most difficult works at all these projects, yet unseen, is the project foundation. It is understandable why geotechnical engineering has recently developed very fast in Vietnam.
Today geotechnical engineering broadens its traditional focus on the science, soil and rock mechanics to the new imperative of sustainable development. Engineering frameworks are strongly being developed for dealing with upcoming technical challenges that have not been satisfactorily resolved, including such problems as precise modeling of nonlinear inelastic structural responses, theories and mathematical models for site eddects and large-scale geotechnical instablities, condition monitoring and control techniques to limit a structure's catastrophic failure, and many others. Much more importantly, these issues are considered not just at local or regional scales but at global scales.
In this challengeing context, the international conference GEOTEC HANOI 2011 in "Geotechnics for Sustainable Development" is organised by FECON Foundation Engineering & Underground Construction JSC., a leading geotechnical contractor in Vietnam, in cooperation with Vietnamese Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE), and with Civil Engineering-Mechanics-Material Association, France, in Hanoi in October 2011. This conference brings to international engineers, researchers and policy-makers not only in the geotechnical field, but also in the construction industry, an excellent opportunity to share ideas and achievements related to sustainable development in civil engineering practice. Moreover, this creates a knowledge exchange between Vienamese and international colleagues. The conference is believed to become a catalyst for the development of the construction area in Vietnam, which currently has a blooming economy.
The conference has six main differential themes: 1) Soft soil improvement and reinforcement. 2) Foundation Engineering. 3) Tunnelling and Underground spaces. 4) Environemntal Geotechnics and Sustainable development. 5) Geotechnical modeling, design and monitoring. 6) Geotechnical case histories.
The conference GEOTEC HANOI 2011 cannot be successful without the enthusiastic participation and valuable contribution of hundreds of experts from all around the world. It can not either be realised without the finacial and organizing support from govermental agencies, research institutes, and private firms in Vietnam, as well as in other countries as Japan, China, France, etc.
Above all, the six keynote lectures given by six well-known geotechnical experst in the world: Professor Sven Hansbo (Sweden), Professor Kenji Ishihara (Japan), Professor Harry Poulos (Australia), Professor Pieter Vermeer (Netherland), Professor Alain Guilloux (France), and Dr. Hiroshi Yoshida (Japan), can be considered as a milestone base for the conference success.
